What type of content do you primarily create?
Descript 3.3 is now available. Here’s what’s new:
Automatic volume leveling
Getting volume levels to match across multiple files and recordings is one of the most tedious parts of mixing a podcast — Descript now handles that automatically by monitoring each audio source against a set threshold. When volume peaks above that threshold, Descript reduces it in small steps that are practically undetectable to the ear, so you end up with a consistent and natural-sounding mix.
Volume normalization on export
When you export a file, Descript normalizes the volume using peak or loudness normalization. In plain language, that means Descript keeps sudden volume spikes in check, so the listening volume doesn’t fluctuate wildly from one part of your mix to another.
Timeline editing improvements
Drag and drop a highlighted range between tracks in a single motion. Want tight, decisive cuts? Descript now snaps clip trimming directly to the nearest word, so you can make precise edits without fiddling around.

New toolbar
We anchored the toolbar at the top of your script to make editing more straightforward. If you’re wondering why, stay tuned: we’re cooking up changes that’ll give you an even smoother workflow.

Other fixes
- Performance and stability improvements.
- Audition Export: Place each file on its own track.
- File Management: You can now tell Descript to always keep the full quality files downloaded on your computer.
Frequently asked questions
What does Descript’s automatic volume leveling do?
It analyzes the loudness of each audio clip, then adjusts the gain to help keep all clips at about the same volume. This saves you from juggling faders or dealing with mismatched levels.
How do I enable auto leveling in Descript?
Go to your App settings or Project settings and toggle on Automatic volume levels. Descript will then adjust each clip’s volume to around -16 dB automatically.
Will auto leveling fix extreme volume spikes or sudden noises?
If a sneeze or other abrupt noise is making your audio spike, split the clip at that point using the Blade tool, then auto-level each portion separately. That approach helps Descript boost the quieter parts while ignoring the loud outlier.
Can I still make manual volume changes after enabling auto leveling?
Yes. Even if auto leveling is on, you can fine-tune volume for specific clips by adjusting their gain or using the timeline tools. Just keep in mind that further auto leveling might override subtle manual changes.
