Time to get a haircut and iron that shirt, because your podcast and video recordings are about to get stunningly, beautifully clear: SquadCast by Descript now supports 4K video recording.

Starting today, Descript subscribers with a Creator, Pro, or Enterprise plan can record from anywhere, with anybody, on any internet connection, in crystal-clear 4K quality.

ICYMI, last month we acquired SquadCast, the most reliable remote recording studio out there. That basically filled the one remaining gap in Descript’s workflow coverage—now you can do everything from recoding to editing to publishing without exporting or even touching another tool. And as of today, you can record in the highest resolution.

4K video makes for a higher quality experience for your audience and gives you a lot more flexibility in post-production; you can punch in tight without losing picture quality, for one thing. If you or any of your guests uses a 4K camera, SquadCast will record their footage in 4K, while capturing other guests at the highest resolution their cameras support.

Note that 4K is still in beta—that means we’re still fine-tuning the performance, carefully monitoring for and ready to fix any unexpected bugs. We know reliability is critical in remote recording, so we want to be super confident before we let it out of beta.

How to record remotely in 4K

As a host starting a recording session:

Step 1. Open the SquadCast web app by selecting New then Remote recording from Descript.

Step 2. Select New Session. You can either start the recording session now, or schedule it to start later.

Step 3. When your session starts, you’ll enter the Green Room, where you can check your camera view, toggle your camera on/off and adjust your microphone and camera settings. To the right of your camera selector, you can adjust the recording quality to 4K [Beta]. Note: you must select a camera with 4K support and be on MacOS to select this option.

Step 4. When you’re done recording, select Edit in Descript to get a transcription and make edits to your recording in Descript.

‍To view your recordings after they’re done uploading, head over to the SquadCast by Descript dashboard. You can also create clips and share your highlights on social media in Descript.
